David Esch : Slide Guard Review

CZ Forum
February  2010

Let me start by saying - I like UPS. Really. Every time they come by, they leave some nice brown box outside. Even when this particular UPS driver got lost and delivered this little brown box at 9PM, I was still happy to see the Big Brown Truck. Did I mention how much I like UPS? When they deliver something this nice, especially!

Inside was the first, the prototype if you will, of the newest High Noon rig to hit the bricks a runnin', the Slide Guard for the new CZ P07 Duty pistol, the new polymer wonder gun that is taking the world by storm, available in 9mm and 40S&W.

I was told this one was not as finely put together or boned as the production models will be. If that's true, let me start bowing from here - this one is pretty darn close to perfect.

Feast thine eyes!

The Slide Guard is made of thick heavy duty leather, designed to withstand some serious use and wear. I appreciate a no-nonsense holster, made for working guns. Carry pistols with me tend to get bounced around in some harsh conditions, and leather to hold them has to be rugged and strong.

Did I mention the boning? Does this look "loose" or "semi-boned"?

I can even see the serrations in the cutout for the de-cocking lever. See that little rectangular bump at the far end? That's for the serial number plate!

Hmm, time of truth - does it fit? The black leather gleams like it's been polished to a wet sheen, as I slide the P07 in.... OOOPH. Ahem, I said, as I start to slide the P07 in...ARRRRGH! OK, so new holsters need just a BIT of stretching. But after getting the P07 seated, I could see it was indeed, made exactly right.

One note, the mould for this gun has the de-cocking lever installed. A P07 with standard safety attached would need that cutout to be a bit more rectangular. I was going to swap my de-cocker back to safety for pictorial purposes, but I chickened out - every time I have to mess with the guts of a pistol I am sure I am going to irreversibly screw something up. So, I put the safety lever right next to the de-cocker for illustration purposes.

The back side is also boned, and shows the triangle for the de-cocker. As a guy who likes de-cockers, me happy.

How about on the belt? Remember how I said this is heavy duty brand new leather? The belt I am wearing is no wimpy skinny dress belt, but a heavy duty work belt. See what the Slide Guard does with it. That's gonna take some breakin' in. I'm up for it.

It holds well, close to the body, but puts the butt out far enough to give a good drawing grip. The polymer P07 is light even with a full load on board, and the Slide Guard holds it easily, no unnecessary movement. I have to say, if this is a prototype, I can't wait to see the final version. The P07 sits, wet molding, as I type this - field test coming up!
